FBI Warns of Rising AI-Driven Financial Fraud Schemes

The FBI has issued a public service announcement highlighting the growing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by cybercriminals to facilitate fraud schemes at unprecedented scales. Generative AI tools allow cybercriminals to create highly convincing text, images, audio, and videos, making their operations more effective and believable. From spear phishing and social engineering to investment fraud and sextortion, the misuse of AI-generated content increases the difficulty of identifying fraudulent activities. These techniques reduce the time and effort criminals expend, enabling them to deceive a broader audience with minimal warning signs of their fraudulent intent.

One common method involves AI-generated text, which is used to craft convincing messages for phishing campaigns, romance scams, and fraudulent websites. These schemes can include embedding AI-powered chatbots into fake cryptocurrency investment platforms or using AI to generate perfect language translations, removing errors that might raise suspicion. Similarly, AI-generated images are leveraged to create realistic fake social media profiles, identification documents, and promotional materials. For instance, criminals have used these images to impersonate executives in real-time video chats or generate false depictions of natural disasters to solicit donations for fake charities. Vocal cloning is another tactic where AI-generated audio mimics the voices of loved ones or public figures, demanding ransom or soliciting immediate financial aid in crises.

The FBI advises the public to remain vigilant against these schemes. To defend against AI-driven fraud, individuals are encouraged to establish secret verification phrases with family members and scrutinize images and videos for subtle imperfections, such as distorted features or unrealistic movements. Calls that sound off-tone or employ unnatural language may indicate vocal cloning. Additionally, minimizing publicly available personal content on social media, verifying identities through official channels, and avoiding unsolicited financial transactions can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Those affected should report incidents to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), including detailed records of interactions and financial transactions.
