Stealthy and Targeted Attacks Against Southern Asian Organizations from Lancefly
Lancefly, an APT group, uses the Merdoor malware to target organizations in South and Southeast Asia for intelligence gathering. Since mid-2022, they have focused on sectors such as aviation, communications, government, and technology. Lancefly's campaigns involve sophisticated techniques like SSH brute force attacks, process injection, and credential dumping. Symantec researchers note potential links to Chinese APT groups APT41 and TG-3390.
#StopRansomware: Highlights BianLian Ransomware
The BianLian ransomware gang targets critical infrastructure, shifting from double extortion to exfiltration-based extortion. The gang uses phishing, RDP, and compromised accounts for initial access, and employs tools like PsExec and Rclone for lateral movement and data exfiltration. Federal agencies warn of their tactics and methods, emphasizing the need for vigilance and strong security measures.
New Akira Ransomware
The new Akira ransomware strain, active since April 2023, has targeted 16 organizations across various industries, including construction, education, financial services, healthcare, insurance, and manufacturing. Akira's threat actors use double extortion techniques, threatening to leak stolen data on their data leak site. The ransomware's homepage reveals a list of victims, and data from those who refused to pay the ransom is available for download.
Dragos Reveals a Security Incident & Failed Extortion Attempt
On May 8th, 2023, Dragos, an industrial cybersecurity company, faced a cyberattack aimed at deploying ransomware. Attackers compromised a new hire's email account and accessed some systems, but role-based access controls prevented them from reaching sensitive data. Dragos contained the incident within 16.5 hours, avoiding any data breaches. The attackers' extortion attempts against executives also failed.
New DarkWatchman RAT Campaign Leverages a Popular Russian Cryptography Site
A new DarkWatchman RAT campaign mimics the popular Russian cryptography site CryptoPro CSP to target Russian users. The campaign involves a phishing page distributing a zip archive that installs the RAT, capturing keystrokes, clipboard data, and system information. DarkWatchman avoids detection by storing data in the registry instead of writing to disk. The malware is deployed via a JavaScript file executed from the TEMP folder.
Kimsuky APT Unleashes ReconShark to Enhance Victim Profiling Capabilities
Kimsuky, a North Korean APT group, has evolved its BabyShark malware into ReconShark to enhance victim profiling. ReconShark conducts system reconnaissance, identifying security monitoring tools and exfiltrating data to a C2 server. Targets include government, nuclear, research, and think tank sectors. The malware is deployed via spearphishing emails with macro-enabled Office documents and can drop additional payloads tailored to evade defenses.
