Ukrainian CERT Warns of APT28 Phishing Attacks Disguised as Windows Updates
Ukrainian CERT warns that APT28 (Fancy Bear) is targeting Ukrainian government bodies with phishing attacks disguised as Windows updates. Emails, appearing to be from system administrators, trick recipients into running PowerShell scripts that collect system information and exfiltrate it to the Mocky service. These attacks use sender addresses formed using employee surnames and initials.
Mac Users Beware: Threat Actor Offers New AMOS Stealer on Telegram for Sale
Atomic macOS Stealer (AMOS) is a new information-stealing malware targeting macOS platforms, sold on Telegram for $1000. It extracts keychain passwords, browser credentials, system information, and cryptocurrency wallet data. AMOS uses fake password prompts to gain elevated privileges and exfiltrates data to the attacker's C2. This malware poses a growing threat to macOS users.
Tonto Team Employs CHM files to Infiltrate Systems with RATs
The Chinese-state-sponsored group Tonto Team is targeting Korean construction, education, and government sectors with malicious CHM files. These files sideload a malicious DLL, execute ReVBShell, and drop the Bisonal remote access trojan (RAT). ASECS's investigation reveals sophisticated methods, including abusing anti-malware product files and establishing persistence via registry keys.
'BellaCiao' Malware Updated and Deployed by Iranian APT
The Iranian state-sponsored threat group Magic Hound has deployed an updated variant of the BellaCiao malware. Targeting critical infrastructure, government, and media organizations across the US, Europe, Middle East, and Asia, the group uses sophisticated techniques to disable security measures and maintain persistence. Bitdefender reports reveal the group's focus on exploiting vulnerabilities and employing social engineering tactics.
FIN7 Operators Seeks Out Veeam Backup Servers for Network Compromise
FIN7, a financially motivated threat group, exploits vulnerabilities in Veeam Backup and Replication software, specifically CVE-2023-27532. The attack, observed by WithSecure, involves executing shell commands to download and run PowerShell scripts from a compromised Veeam Backup instance. The intrusion includes reconnaissance, creating persistence, and lateral movement. Administrators should urgently patch and secure their Veeam servers to prevent such attacks.
Sophos's 2023 Adversary Reports Unveil Attack Patterns
Sophos's 2023 Adversary Reports reveal that ransomware incidents led attacks in 2022, accounting for 68% of cases. Manufacturing, healthcare, education, and retail were most affected. Common initial access methods included exploiting vulnerabilities and compromised credentials. PowerShell was the most frequently used living-off-the-land binary, and Cobalt Strike was the most commonly abused public tool.
