'BellaCiao' Malware Updated and Deployed by Iranian APT
The Iranian state-sponsored threat group Magic Hound has deployed an updated variant of the BellaCiao malware. Targeting critical infrastructure, government, and media organizations across the US, Europe, Middle East, and Asia, the group uses sophisticated techniques to disable security measures and maintain persistence. Bitdefender reports reveal the group's focus on exploiting vulnerabilities and employing social engineering tactics.
FIN7 Operators Seeks Out Veeam Backup Servers for Network Compromise
FIN7, a financially motivated threat group, exploits vulnerabilities in Veeam Backup and Replication software, specifically CVE-2023-27532. The attack, observed by WithSecure, involves executing shell commands to download and run PowerShell scripts from a compromised Veeam Backup instance. The intrusion includes reconnaissance, creating persistence, and lateral movement. Administrators should urgently patch and secure their Veeam servers to prevent such attacks.
Sophos's 2023 Adversary Reports Unveil Attack Patterns
Sophos's 2023 Adversary Reports reveal that ransomware incidents led attacks in 2022, accounting for 68% of cases. Manufacturing, healthcare, education, and retail were most affected. Common initial access methods included exploiting vulnerabilities and compromised credentials. PowerShell was the most frequently used living-off-the-land binary, and Cobalt Strike was the most commonly abused public tool.
Russia Aims to Find Logistical Weaknesses in Ukraine for Supply Chain Compromise
Experts warn that Russia is focusing on Ukraine's supply chain vulnerabilities to gain a strategic advantage. The NSA's Rob Joyce highlights that Russia is targeting critical infrastructure and Western logistical support to disrupt the flow of humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine. U.S. organizations are also at risk, as Russia intensifies intelligence gathering and cyber operations.
Patch PaperCut Servers to Defend Against Exploit
Horizon3 has released a PoC exploiting PaperCut print management software, targeting vulnerabilities CVE-2023-27350 and CVE-2023-27351 for remote code execution. Patching to the latest versions is essential to prevent attacks by Clop and LockBit ransomware gangs, which use these exploits to install remote access software and execute PowerShell commands for system compromise and data exfiltration.
OCX#HARVESTER Campaign Unleashes More_eggs Suite on Financial Service Organizations
Since December 2022, the OCX#HARVESTER campaign has targeted financial service organizations using the More_eggs malware suite. Phishing emails deliver malicious shortcuts, leading to code execution and persistence via living off-the-land binaries like msxsl.exe. The malware collects system data, captures desktop images, and connects to the attackers' C2 for further exploitation.
