Austin Peay State University Ransomware Attack
A ransomware attack disrupted Austin Peay State University on April 27, 2022, prompting an urgent campus-wide alert to disconnect from the network. While the threat was reportedly contained and didn’t interrupt classes or exams, the responsible ransomware group was never identified.
Conti Ransomware Hits Costa Rica Electricity
Junta Administrativa del Servicio Eléctrico de Cartago (JASEC), a government agency controlling electricity in Cartago, Costa Rica, has been impacted by Conti ransomware. The attack occurred on Saturday, targeting systems managing the company's emails, website, and administrative collection systems, which were encrypted. JASEC's general manager Luis Solano assured customers that 'electricity and internet services operate normally,' but the incident has inhibited customers from paying electric or internet bills. Bill payments have been suspended until the issue is resolved.
APT37 Targeting Journalists and Researchers
NK News, with Stairwell's assistance, identifies APT37 targeting journalists and researchers with spear-phishing emails containing GOLDBACKDOOR malware. The multi-stage infection process uses LNK files and PowerShell scripts to deploy the malware, which enables remote command execution, file operations, keylogging, and uninstallation.
Hive0117 Phishing Campaigns
IBM Security X-Force reports on Hive0117's phishing campaigns identified in February 2022. Targeting electronic, industrial, and telecommunications sectors, the group deploys DarkWatchman RAT through emails posing as the Russian Government’s Federal Bailiffs Service. The campaigns, targeting company leaders in Lithuania, Estonia, and Russia, aim to enable illegal access to numerous clients and end-users. The activity appears unrelated to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Tricks from SocGholish and Zloader
Cybereason reports on SocGholish and Zloader malware. SocGholish uses social engineering for drive-by downloads, leading to Cobalt Strike and ransomware. Zloader masquerades as popular software, using MSI files to collect data and disable defenses. Both malware types show increased activity and pose significant threats to sensitive data.
SolarWinds Group, UNC2452 Linked to APT29
Mandiant links UNC2452, the group behind the SolarWinds attack, to APT29. This group targets global organizations across various industries, leveraging stolen credentials, phishing, and advanced knowledge of Microsoft365 to maintain persistent access. They swiftly achieve domain admin privileges and adapt tactics upon discovery.
