Following a ransomware attack on July 4th, 2023, the Port of Nagoya in Japan has successfully resumed operations. The attack caused a significant disruption due to system failures on their computer systems, resulting in a backlog of shipping containers as port workers were unable to load and unload cargo. As one of the largest ports in Japan, the Port of Nagoya plays a crucial role in the country's trading activities, accounting for approximately 10% of Japan's total trading volume, which equates to the handling of roughly 10,000 pieces of cargo daily. Notably, it serves as a key export hub for automotive vehicles manufactured by Toyota Motor. According to a report from Japan Times, the ransomware attack is attributed to the LockBit 3.0 ransomware gang, but the company was able to recover without paying a ransom. The Nagoya Harbor Transportation Association attributed the delay in restoration efforts due to "longer than expected time to inspect the backup data for viruses," said Japan Times.
