Security Incident Shuts Down Nonprofit Hospital Systems

CommonSpirit Health, one of the leading nonprofit healthcare systems in the United States, has suffered a cybersecurity incident forcing some facilities to shut down their systems. The healthcare organization shared a statement on Tuesday, October 4th, 2022, communicating the incident "As a precautionary step, we have taken certain IT systems offline, which may include electronic health record (EHR) and other systems. Our facilities are following existing protocols for system outages and taking steps to minimize the disruption." The health system provides care to over 21 million patients operating in 21 US states with over 140 hospitals and 1,000 care sites. CommonSpirit Health serves is the parent company to many medical centers, thus a downstream impact of the incident affects centers including Bergan Mercy Hospital, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, along with several providers associated with multiple Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. Due to the outages, hospitals are rescheduling patient appointments if their provider and/or care facility is impacted.
