Cerber Ransomware Exploits Confluence Vulnerability

Sophos has tracked the exploitation of Confluence vulnerability CVE-2022-26134, discovering that the attack vector is shrinking with fewer vulnerable Confluence servers. Despite this, two exploit attempts were observed targeting Windows servers to deploy Cerber ransomware. Attackers ran curl and PowerShell commands, with the PowerShell command encoded to download and execute a payload in the %temp% folder. The attacks were mitigated successfully, with no evidence of data exfiltration or lateral movement.

Attackers Exploit Telerik UI to Deliver Cryptominer and Cobalt Strike

Sophos researchers have identified the reuse of tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) by attackers exploiting the Telerik UI vulnerability CVE-2019-18935. The threat actors deliver Cobalt Strike beacons to disk, executing encoded PowerShell commands to download additional malware and establish persistence. The observed attack chain includes placing the Cobalt Strike DLL payload in the C:\Windows\Temp directory, downloading cryptominer XMRig, and using group policy objects and scheduled tasks for persistence.
