'Winter Vivern' Running Espionage Campaigns to Support Russia and Belarus
Winter Vivern, a suspected pro-Russian APT group, targets European government agencies and telecommunication providers with espionage campaigns. Using phishing websites and malicious documents, the group gains unauthorized access to sensitive systems and information, supporting Russian and Belarusian interests.
Barcelona Hospital Cancels Appointments After Cyber Attack
A ransomware attack on Hospital Clinic de Barcelona on March 6th, 2023, caused the cancellation of 150 non-urgent surgeries and 3,000 patient checkups. Hospital staff are unable to access clinical records. The Catalonian Cybersecurity Agency links the attack to partners of the Ransom House gang, although the group denies direct involvement.
Breach of Healthcare Organization Exposes Data for U.S. House Members and Staff
A significant data breach at DC Health Link has exposed sensitive personal information of U.S. House members, staff, and their families. The FBI is investigating the breach, which has impacted hundreds and led to the sale of stolen data by threat actor IntelBroker, including Social Security Numbers and more.
The On Again, Off Again Emotet is Now Back On
Emotet malware is back with new campaigns as of March 7th, 2023. Researchers discovered spam emails containing weaponized Office documents with embedded macros. Once users enable content, the macros execute to retrieve Emotet DLLs from a remote site and run them on the host machine.
Parallax RAT Sets Aim at Cryptocurrency Organizations
Parallax RAT is targeting cryptocurrency organizations with phishing campaigns. Active since 2019, this malware reads login credentials, gathers keystrokes, and gains remote desktop control. Recent attacks use process hollowing for stealth and persistence, allowing attackers to communicate via Notepad and instruct victims to connect to a Telegram channel.
New And Emerging Dangers Hide Within OneNote
Since December 2022, weaponized OneNote files have been increasingly used in phishing campaigns. These files distribute malware such as Formbook, Qakbot, and AsyncRAT. A recent Trustwave report highlights infection chains involving fake product inquiries and malicious OneNote documents, leading to data exfiltration and system compromises.
