All Threat Reports
Mandiant Tracks APT29 Phishing Campaigns
Mandiant has identified Russian state-sponsored threat group APT29 launching phishing campaigns against government and diplomacy sectors since January 17th, 2022. The campaigns targeted entities in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, using administrative notice themes and compromised email accounts. The phishing emails contained HTML droppers that wrote IMG or ISO files to disk, leading to infection via LNK and DLL files. APT29 used custom malware such as ROOTSAW, BOOMMIC, and BEATDROP. Techniques included certificate abuse, registry modifications, scheduled tasks, native command discovery, and kerberoasting, with domain admin privileges typically reached within 12 hours.

Significant DDoS Attack Targeted a Cryptocurrency Platform
Cloudflare reported a significant DDoS attack on a cryptocurrency platform, involving 15.3 million HTTPS requests. The attack, originating from 6,000 bots in 112 countries, lasted 15 seconds and targeted computing resources more intensively than typical HTTP attacks. Cloudflare successfully mitigated the attack.
AvosLocker Infection with Abused Driver
Trend Micro observed an AvosLocker infection chain in the US, abusing a legitimate Windows driver, Aswarpot.sys, for defense evasion. Attackers initially accessed the system via a Zoho ManageEngine vulnerability, deploying a webshell. The attack chain included executing a PowerShell script via mshta.exe, downloading tools like AnyDesk, Mimikatz, Nmap, PDQ deploy, and Netscan, and creating an administrator account. The attackers used NMap to identify vulnerable Log4j hosts and PDQ to deploy a batch script across the victim network.
