Mustang Panda Targets Europe
Chinese threat actor Mustang Panda targets U.S., Asia, and European entities with phishing campaigns. Cisco Talos reports the use of PlugX malware and themes related to COVID-19 and political matters. The activity, coinciding with the Russia-Ukraine conflict, aims to conduct espionage through various sophisticated techniques.
NAIKON Threat Group Resurfaces
NAIKON (Override Panda) APT group resurfaces, targeting ASEAN nations with phishing emails containing malicious VBA code. Cluster25 reports the group's focus on foreign affairs, government, military, and technology sectors, using Viper beacons for intelligence collection and espionage.
Significant DDoS Attack Targeted a Cryptocurrency Platform
Cloudflare reported a significant DDoS attack on a cryptocurrency platform, involving 15.3 million HTTPS requests. The attack, originating from 6,000 bots in 112 countries, lasted 15 seconds and targeted computing resources more intensively than typical HTTP attacks. Cloudflare successfully mitigated the attack.
AvosLocker Infection with Abused Driver
Trend Micro observed an AvosLocker infection chain in the US, abusing a legitimate Windows driver, Aswarpot.sys, for defense evasion. Attackers initially accessed the system via a Zoho ManageEngine vulnerability, deploying a webshell. The attack chain included executing a PowerShell script via mshta.exe, downloading tools like AnyDesk, Mimikatz, Nmap, PDQ deploy, and Netscan, and creating an administrator account. The attackers used NMap to identify vulnerable Log4j hosts and PDQ to deploy a batch script across the victim network.
VMware Workspace ONE Access Vulnerabilities
On April 14th and 15th, 2022, Morphisec identified the exploitation of VMware Workspace ONE Access vulnerabilities, with CVE-2022-22954 being the most critical. These vulnerabilities allow attackers to deploy ransomware, coin miners, and backdoors like Cobalt Strike. The tactics observed are similar to those used by the Iranian threat group Rocket Kitten.
Red Canary's Intelligence Insights
Red Canary's March 2022 intelligence insights reveal Impacket as the top threat, with shifts in rankings for other threats. Notable changes include SocGholish dropping to #8, Emotet rising to #6, and Qbot adjusting its delivery techniques to use MSI packages after Microsoft's VBA macros block.
